More Q's on becoming a constable

I really want to thank you guys for you answers to my previous thread.

I've been really digging and have some more questions...

I'm getting really close to my establishing residency date in Armstrong County.

Can I make a decent living as a constable? I don't mean to pry into personal earnings. I'm a self starter and I'm tired of the IT field after 10 years.

What's the avg salary?
How many of you have a second job or are you 100% Constable?
Is it better to start as a deputy to learn the ropes?

I'd be interested in meeting with a couple of you to get your insights.

I saw the article about PA has 1.4 Million outstanding warrants so there is a deffinate need for Constables.

I'd be making the transition between May 1 and July 30 to full time constable.

Thank you again

Do you already have work lined up? Been to the local MDJ's offices yet?

Can you make a decent living? Yes but only IF you already have an MDJ's office to work out of. I can tell you that the IT field is a lot more dependable than a constable's job. Plus you don't have to search burnt-out meth labs or trashed-out trailers full of used diapers and dog crap looking for some strung-out heroin addict that's hiding in a closet at 3 AM.

If you just get your constable certification and try to go at it without work already lined up, you're going to go broke real quick. Just the $1000 or so it's going to cost to get the basic equipment, not to mention the $500 insurance, cuts into your initial profit line before you ever serve a warrant.

Yes, PA does have an amazing amount of outstanding warrants. Whether you can get your hands on any is another subject.

Beaks,

I live in Armstrong County and work 60 plus hours a week serving warrants, and doing transports. If you want some help in anything, questions, help with paperwork, tools that are available for us, etc. Do not be afraid to ask. We take pride in Armstrong County in working together as constables as the way it should be everywhere. Where are you planning on moving to in Armstrong.

Another work question.

Gentlemen,
I have 2 1/2 years to retire from DE P&P, if I want. I've been seriously looking at moving back home (Adams County, PA) after I retire and becoming a Constable. To be honest, I'd like to start out as a deputy constable until I get to know the ropes and qualify for residency. I love law enforcement and I'd like to know if Adams or York Counties would be a good place to work. I'd like to get as much info now as I can. I didn't plan well when I retired from the Air Force and I don't want to make that mistake again.
Thanks.

As a police officer I have the choice of taking people with warrants to Central Booking or turning them over to a constable. We do NOT issue field receipts !

In a pinch I'll let an Arrest and Return parking warrant slide if we are busy but otherwise I have my list of DEPENDABLE Constables.

Field Reciepts as in the way they do the so called them in yourk county is unlawful due to the Rules of Criminal Procedures. Any one who does it is opening themselves to a hugh Lawsuit.. I can retire again if this was to happen to me and some constable or deputy gives me an appoitment and takes my money i be laughing all the way with the Lawyers to the nearest Bank.....
