My dad sent me this email, and I have no clue if it is authentic, but I sure like what it says!

Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia , as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks. A day after a group of mainstream Muslim leaders pledged loyalty to Australia and her Queen at a special meeting with Prime Minister John Howard, he and his Ministers made it clear that extremists would face a crackdown.

Treasurer Peter Costello, seen as heir apparent to Howard, hinted that some radical clerics could be asked to leave the country if they did not accept that Australia was a secular state, and its laws were made by parliament. "If those are not your values, if you want a country which has Sharia law or a theocratic state, then Australia is not for you," he said on National Television.

"I'd be saying to clerics who are teaching that there are two laws governing people in Australia : one the Australian law, and another Islamic law, that is false. If you can't agree with parliamentary law, independent courts, democracy, and would prefer Sharia law and have the opportunity to go to another country, which practices it, perhaps, then, that's a better option," Costello said.

Asked whether he meant radical clerics would be forced to leave, he said those with dual citizenship could possibly be asked to move to the other country.

Education Minister Brendan Nelson later told reporters that Muslims who did not want to accept local values should "clear off. Basically people who don't want to be Australians, and who don't want, to live by Australian values and understand them, well then, they can basically clear off," he said.

Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques. "IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take it or leave it. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians.

"However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the 'politically correct' crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others. I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to Australia.

"However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand. This idea of Australia being a multi-cultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. And as Australians, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle.

"This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society Learn the language!

"Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture. We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.

"If the Southern Cross offends you, or you don't like 'A Fair Go,' then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. By all means, keep your culture, but do not force it on others.

"This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom: THE RIGHT TO LEAVE.

"If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted."

100% agreed! Just change the name of the nation and this ought to be sent to DC, in particular Congress and the Senate, and the DNC for sure!

Being originally an Aussie myself, I am familiar with this. It is actually a collection of quotes combined, so it slightly misleading. You can check the whole story out if you do a search for it on snopes.com (they dispel and confirm urban legends) and make your own mind up. I would have posted it my self but I am sitting in this Russian cafe right now with my battery about to expire.

I recall a few of those quotes from our Politicians, however, they are not being quoted verbatim and the original words were not so blunt nor indicative of racial/ethnic bias.

examples.....
Treasurer Peter Costello, seen as heir apparent to Howard, hinted that some radical clerics could be asked to leave the country if they did not accept that Australia was a secular state, and its laws were made by parliament.
"If those are not your values, if you want a country which has Sharia law or a theocratic state, then Australia is not for you,"
While Costello did make that quote, the author has mislead people by saying... "....hinted that some radical clerics could be asked to leave.....". Not at anytime did Costello point a finger at clerics in general, but to just one of them who has been very vocal in the media saying things like "Women are just meat" and blaming the woman if she were raped in addition to saying that Jihad was acceptable.

Education Minister Brendan Nelson later told reporters that Muslims who did not want to accept local values should "clear off. Basically people who don't want to be Australians, and who don't want, to live by Australian values and understand them, well then, they can basically clear off," he said.

The alleged quote by Nelson was in relation to ALL immigrants. This was said by him in response to a few riots and acts of civil disobedience between Estonians and Ukrainians mainly, but also other ethnic groups that turned to violence against each other including the burning of the Aussie flag.

The latter part of the text is suggested to have been quoted by our Prime Minister John Howard. The first of those paragraphs is quoted as him saying it, which is probably true, however, the remainder is definitely not quoted by Howard.

"Most Australians believe in God.
Not true !!. The most recent Australian Bureau of Statistics census revealed that now only 40% of Australians believe in God.

"If the Southern Cross offends you, or you don't like 'A Fair Go,' then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet.
The "southern cross" is a rebellion flag created in the 1860's borne out of an armed conflict between miners and the government. No Government official would ever make reference to it in such a way.

So to put this into perspective, some of the quotes are from politicians but altered to the extent of changing the original intention and meaning, while the others are clearly from a vocal individual,.... not a politician.

The "email" is misleading, suggesting that our politicians and our countries natural born citizens are radical themselves.

As a further relative comment...

Some of those quotes came out of a discovery that some Australian citizens (natural born or naturalised) from ethnic parents, had returned or traveled to their ethnic country and participated in their wars and civil conflicts.

This is illegal for Australians.
No Australian citizen is permitted to take up arms and fight in a foreign war except that of Australians who are members of the military and it is a Aussie Government military operation.

Example is that of Australian David Hicks who spent a good deal of time in Guantanomo Bay as a result of his participating in training with the Taliban.

An Australian Journalist found himself under investigation when he was visiting the conflict zone between India and Pakistan and chose to take hold of a mounted machine gun and run off a few rounds in the direction of the opposing force.

It needs to be pointed out that the "Southern Cross" IS on our current flag. (Take a look at your avatar 303) I would assume that is what he is talking about. At least that is what comes to my mind at first! I have always looked at the Southern Cross as being "Aussie" ....even though those pesky Kiwis put it on their flag too!

And let's not forget, Aussies are quite proud of their "outlaws", anyway. By the way, Ned Kelly and gang used to get fresh horses from my great grandmothers farm.
My mum remembers her grandmother talking about it.
Perhaps I should not tell this too my future LE Department during the interview. LOL!

Correct, the star constellation "southern cross" is featured on both Australia and New Zealand's flags. The constellation being only visible in the skies of the southern hemisphere.

The reference to "the Southern Cross" refers to the rebellion flag from the Eureka Stockade. (image below)

Thank you for the clarifications on this, Rule303. I appreciate it.

I still wish some of our politicians had the cojones to make similar statements!
