Another customer "service" rant:

I didn't receive my electric bill yet this month, and last month it was due on the 17th so I figured I'd better look into it.

I went online to the power company's website and tried to access my bill. Well, to look at your bill online having a service address is not enough, even when you know the last 4-digits of your social security number, your mother's maiden name, the name of your first pet and the location of your Johnny Quest secret decoder ring. To register your account and be able to see your bill you actually have to have your account number.

Okay, the words "account number" are highlighted on the screen, so I click on the link in hopes of finding some way of getting my account number. Lo and behold, a screenshot of a sample bill pops up with the account number circled. That would be fine and dandy, except for the fact that I DON'T HAVE A BILL!

Next, I click on the "Contact Us" link and fill out their handy-dandy little form to send them an email describing my dilemma, and asking them how much I owe and where I should send payment. It thanks me for contacting them and says they'll get back to me in 2 to 3 business days. Okay, still enough time to get a payment to them and not be late.

This morning I open my email to find a reply already! My hopes high, I open the email to find this message: Thank you for contacting Dominion.
You can view an exact copy of your bill online that you can print or save for your records.

To view and / or print your bills online:

Register or log into Manage Your Account.

Click on the View Bill link.

Thank you,
Dominion Customer Service

this is pretty easy to solve in the overall scheme of things.

You obviously haven't seen my "filing" system. :P

If all else fails, I will have to break down and actually *gasp* call them on the telephone! How utterly 20th Century!!

well, that is after pressing 1 for English, 3 For billing, 2 for billing questions, and then having to enter your account number so a Customer Service representative can better assist you as this call maybe recorded for future training purposes.

I pay all my bills online, so I keep a copy of the bill until the next one comes (even if it clears the bank before that). That way, I always have the last bill on hand. I do have a handy dandy filing system - I'm an organizational nut. :P

For my online bills (some I choose to receive electronically), I keep them organized in the same way, for the same length of time, except they are in appropriate folders in my e-mail account.

I also maintain a log of all pertinent account numbers, phone numbers, etc. for anyone I choose to do business with. This way, if I have to contact them, I have all the information I need right at my fingertips. If there are delays in getting what I need from them, it certainly isn't going to be due to my inefficiencies! (Read: I can place the blame for any of that on them. ;) )
