I am currently going through this 5 day class. What a killer. I did ask for it and I am sure someday I'll be glad but for now it is a lot of DREARY regs with the usual TON of exceptions.

I am already DOT cert to do inspections so I thought this would be " fun". :)

If anyone is ever interested in this area, you should really WANT to get into it !

It's a dirty job, but someone's got to do it. :thumbs_up

At least it will look good on the old resumé, right?

Interesting. I know here in MN the commercial stuff is left to State Patrol. Not sure about hazmat though, since that isn't necessarily commercially exclusive . . . . . . ?

Pa and some other states have permitted Municipal Police Officers to get fully DOT certified as well as Haz-Mat and Tanker inspections.

We don't do it full time like PSP , and Motor Carrier Enforcmment does but we had to attend THEIR schools and pass THEIR tests to get cert. As a police officer , my jurisdicion is limited to ...my jurisdiction of 52 sq miles. As a DOT inspector , I have the whole state available.

PSP and Motor Carrier rarely if ever get into my area( they usually stick to the interstate) and yet I have PLENTY of commercial vehicles and haz-mat trucks in my area daily.

mcsap,

How did the HAZMAT class turn out?

Are you an official 'glow worm' now?

Perhaps you can use your training to reduce the number of the blue canaries or copological indicators out there.

There are only about 250 " local " officers who are DOT cert in my state. I enjoy being one of them. :)

99% of Haz-mat is commercially exclusive. The E-250 vans that drive around placarded with OXYGEN , they are taking oxygen to peoples homes etc...they are in fact a commercial vehicle. The driver needs to have a Class C CDL with a Haz-Mat endorsement.

The 2 things that make a vehicle a commercial vehicle are...

1. Weight. A single vehicle over 26,000 lbs or a combination vehicle with a GVWR over 26,000 lbs

2. Haz-Mat.

A large construction company in my area uses a lot of explosives. THey drive around in a placarded F-150 truck and the driver needs a Class C CDL with the haz-mat endorsement.

Havn't heard yet. They said 10 days and that was on Aug 24th.

Sounds like your certification process is as efficient as ours.
