I am going to the Ahmanson Recruit Training Center tonight for the first time to start the CAPs program offered by the LAPD. It is for 3 hours and I am so scared!!!! I am going so that I get in WAY better shape for the academy, but I am a girl, and I do NOT want to be that stereotypical one that everyone is looking at and thinking I shouldn't be there. I mean, I can do like 15 good push ups and run a couple of miles, but I am SURE there are going to be guys there who run circles around me. Has anyone done this program?? Give me some tips??? I am going to throw up, I am sure. Three hours is a loooong time.

I am not familiar with the program but would say this. Don't worry about being the best in comparison to others. Only focus on doing your best and improving yourself over time.

It seems like, no matter how good you get, there is always someone better. The key is to not allow yourself to become lax.

Good luck!

when you get to the academy and as you go through it,as long as you can show improvements as you go then there is nothing to worry about. as long as you put 110% into what you are doing that's all they can ask for. you know your abilitys. they are going to push you to that ability and beyond. just stay in they and you will do just fine. california needs alot of good officers. i'm from california also.

Thanks for you responses!! I actually went the other night and had a blast!! It was definitely the hardest work out of my life, but you are right - I did the best I could and (when the pain goes away) am going to push myself every day. Every Officer and candidate there was sooo encouraging. I mean, definitely intimidating with all the "YES, SIR"s, but it was a really good experience.

PS - I didn't throw up.:D

that great to hear. so when do you go to the academy. and just remember it's going to be alot of work but it will be fun. and it will be the best experience of you life. it sounds to me that you are going to be just fine there. remember to do you push-ups. alot of them. just three set of 20 to start or due 15. set are 1,2,3 until you reach 20. that's one set. do three of those. well good luck.

Thanks for the work out advice. The push ups I can do . . . the pull ups are not quite so easy. I am going to buy a bar tomorrow and start with negatives, but there is a girl at CAPs who can do a lot, and she is helping me out. I am super competitive, and there is a lot of adrenaline flowing when I am there, so . . . if only I could get over that wall a little more gracefully!! HOPEfully I get in the August class.

And, yeah, I can't imagine the nickname I would be tagged with if I threw up on my first day!! You know what they say about impressions . . .

a little something about the wall as long as you can get half of your body over it then just lean foward and then you are over the wall. do not let it get to you. as long as you get over it that's all that counts.
