Are you looking to just get a home camera and stick it up on the dash or do you want a true car cam system?

home camera, our county guys have home cameras. if I could afford 1000 dollars worth of equipment, I'd get a regular system with wireless audio and everything

I would get a mini DV tape camera. They record onto a tape that is reuseable and gives some very high quality video. Also these cameras all come with a "firewire" cable or USB2.0 cable that lets you copy your tape over to a computer. By copying over to the compter you can then burn a CD or DVD of the event.
What ever is on sale at Best Buy would work well. Sony, JVC, Panasonic are all good and you do not need the top of the line with all kinds of crazy effects for makeing home movies you just need the ability to tape and tape in low light.
This is also fun in that when we went to burning DVDs we found most local lawyers did not have a DVD player in the office. So they had to go out and buy a dvd player to watch the video in the office before going to court.
**Note to PA & DA on this forums we told our PA a month before going to DVD so they had a DVD player on hand before getting the first disk from us.
