I haven’t seen a movie for awhile. I do enjoy going to them but just haven’t had the time. There are a few that I want to see. They are (in no particular order):
Harry Potter-to get lost in the magic
The Lord of the Rings-to get lost in the fantasy
The Royal Tenenbaums-looks like a hoot
Kate & Leopold-YES, another romantic comedy with Meg Ryan-need I say more?! ;D

Only home movies. Watched Enemy at the gates and Shaft(remake) on DVD. Both very good movies. Don't like to go to the cinema. A lot of clients are there to met. Also a lot of problems with groups of immigrants who don't behave there..If i go always with fellow officers.

Saw Vanilla Sky last week and I was not impressed with it at all. >:(
I went to see Ocean 11. It is pretty entertaining if you leave your brain at the door. I think my wife wants me to see a beautiful mind next.

I thought that The Lord of the Rings was good and much like I imagined when I read it. I hate the fact that I have to wait so long for the next part.
Harry Potter. Took the boy to see that and..........
I thought that The Pledge was really great. See it.

I've not seen any recent movies, but make this observation..
Notice how long it's been since a "wholesome" film has been made? (wholesome = those films that uplift the soul, get you back in touch with humanity, touch the heart etc...)
Those great movies like "Driving Miss Daisy", "Fried Green Tomatoes", "Europa Europa", just to name a few..

This has come up before, but why not again. Phoey on the true to life stuff I see too much of the true to life stuff everyday atwork, I to have a little SciFi and Fantasy in there, Lord of the rings will be great but you cant cram a 12 hour book into a 2 hour movie. And for RUlE how bout the new Sean Pen movie it is supposed to be very heart warming.
I want to see Black Hawk Down..Anyone see it yet?Heard it was good.. ???

On the topic of good movies.... here's an Australian Actors success story...
He went from a low paid stand up comic to a high paid actor in just a few years...
Starring in Black Hawk Down and Hulk
http://www.smh.com.au/news/0201/17/entertainment/entertain2.html
And by the way... as a comedian... he is fantastic !
Go see Black Hawk Down for the history of the event not for entertainment. It's said to be a very accurate account of what went on there. It left me angry with our previous administration, but proud of our troops...

On DVD, March or die, about the french foreign legion, just after WW I in french Morocco. Starring Gene Hackman, Terence Hill and Catherine Deneuve. Also Sniper with Tom Berenger. I'm good with an rifle and like this.

If it isn't out on video, chances are that I haven't seen it. Then, when I do see it, it's always years after everyone else sees it. I just saw Something About Mary for the first time the other night. Now I can finally LMAO at all those little sayings that came out of that movie. Hey, I wonder... is it ever really too late to say: franks and beans! ;D
I saw blackhawk down and it was a remake of the battle. I did enjoy it but it is not like a movie to take a date to or anything.

So now you know why they all laugh at the phrase "ah, hair gell".

That is one damned funny movie.... I can't think of anything that comes close except for maybe the episode in British TV series Young Ones in the scene where Rick finds the 'mouse' in the girls hand bag.
;D ;D
Rebecca

Oh gosh, don't remind me of the hair gel scene... that was funny, but pretty darn rank, too. Still, that movie is definitely one seen better late than never. Glad I popped it into the machine. ;D
I watched "Pearl Harbor".I loved it!Great battle scenes. The love story was done real well also.It didn't take over the movie.Don't know why it got bad reviews. It is well worth watching more than once I think. ;)
Rule303

"Pearl Harbour" was historically extremely inacurate. It was flawed with physical impossibilities (the close pattern of the Zeros coming in on their first raid) etc.
I enjoyed watching it, as a film, but disregarded it as a historical or factual interpretaion of the real events.

Hey BigPig...Did it really take you 12 hours to read Lord of the Rings? Just kidding....it took me 12 Years.
The Movie was 3 hours...I heard on Entertainment Tonight that the DVD will be the directors cut at Four Hours long.
The movie did hold VERY well with the original book...and you really don't notice any thing missing except Frodo and Sam singing all the time.
I give this one two thumbs up. Cant wait to see the DVD Directors cut.

I don't think this is too much off topic...
But did you know...
That old movie called "Deep Throat" has around 5 different versions. ?
Apparently the X rated version released outside the US is more explicit than the X rated version within the US.
Also, there are 3 different versions of "Crocodile Dundee". The version I saw in Australia has scenes in it not seen in the US and visa versa.
My question is... why have a "directors cut"? Just release the whole darn thing in the first place.
The last movie I saw in the theater was Pearl Harbor. Don't intend going back for a long time.

Also saw K-PAX with Kevin Spacey. Started off good, took a turn and I didn't think I'd keep watching, but did, and then it took another turn that kept me watching. Overall, I'd say it was pretty good. Glad I didn't pay for a theater ticket, though!

On comic book heroes becoming movies....
I was VERY dissapointed with the Phnatom Movie..
When you look at the incredible animation and computer graphis of recent movies, the capicity of movie making is beyond imagination...
But with the Phantom movie, with people who have since died of old age as fans of the Phantom, what an anti-climax.. !!
There was so much potential, but the movie never lived up to it.

Agree wiht ya on that one, along with it also The Mask, Guyver, Toxic Advenger, swamp thing (old one), avengers, Dr. Strange, Hulk, And I would never leave out Johnna Hex (Last Gunfighter) Just to name a few had very little of a budget. I was very displeased with the Punisher also, staring Dalph Lungren, good movie but squat for a budget. Now that Blade and Xmen have made out like crazy at the box office Marvel has enough of a budget to start and not stop. I am so looking forward to Xmen 2, Captain America, Spiderman 2. Daredevil, Superman (although DC should be good), Iron Fist, Ghost Rider (imagine his face on a happy meal container) They are even talking about a Black Panther movie after Blade 3. But then some people that know the back ground of the Black Panther comic might not want to see it.

Can I give a reccomendation?
A video worth renting.... "THE LIGHT HORSEMEN"
This was filmed in Australia, and is based on the true historic story of World War 2 where Australia received it's first command, independant of "mother England" and captured Bersheeba... Australian injuinity and expertise and stamina...
A darn good movie... I highly reccomend it... The actor Jon Blake, had a car crash driving home from making the movie and has been left a quadraplegic. He sued the movie company and won...
Irregardless of that, it's a great film.
Missy
05-19-2002, 04:57 PM
I'll have to remember that one, Rule. But in my tiny little backwoods town, the list of rentals is extremely limited. Will have to pick it up some Friday night on my way home from work in "da big city". BTW - is it an older movie?
Okay, I had to give "The Others" another chance, when I was not apt to fall asleep, so popped it back in today. It has what I thought was a very unique "twist" to the story, however, I think it came much too late in the movie. Still wouldn't recommend it.
Just checked out new movies at Yahoo, and it looks like this summers pickin's are slim...
Ok, I saw a really weird and psychotically interesting movie the other day..."Unfaithful"...Makes a person think twice about consequences... ;)

Saw A Beautiful Mind last night. I thought it was very good (I didn't fall asleep as I usually do with movies). And I finished it the same night I started watching it. If you know me and my movie watching habits at home, that says a lot!
Movies on my to watch list:
Panic Room
The Bourne Identity
MIB II
Minority Report
Windtalkers
John Q
Changing Lanes
High Crimes
And since neither my son or my nephew will be seen at a theater with me (NO, it's not how I look - they are 16 and 18 years old - that says it all!), does anyone want to go to the movies with me? My treat... ;)
Missy

So I got a movie date and went to see Minority Report.
I thought it was good, but maybe could have been better. The plot itself is a great one, and since it's a movie set in 2054, all the high-tech stuff they used was cool, and I especially liked their computers and data storage, and the cars. Some of it seemed a little over the top, as in "B" movie science fiction. The filming was "jittery" many times, which was distracting.
But generally speaking, it was good - after I thawed out! the theater was about 50 degrees when we got there and had to tell them to turn off the A/C!

Driving Miss Daisy was an excellent film, as was ":fried Green Tomatoes".
So many films that are released these days are nothing more than lust, action, limited scripts, big name actors and multi million dollar promotions and merchandise.
I LOVE films that return to the way they used to be. Examination of human life and the role we play in our purpose for being here. With good dialogue and sensational acting ability, it makes a movie worth seeing and 'experiencing'.
I understand that in Rambo (the first one) Stallone's script (dialogue) had him say less than 100 words in the entire film. In Terminator, Schwarzenegger said less than 30 words. Where is the acting ability in that?
It's like a porno film... no acting ability required. I chuckle at the thought of a porno film production.... the director calls out "Cut Cut"... then prompts the 'star' ... "Betty Bazongas. Your lines were ooo ooo aaah, not, ooo aaah oooo"

Glock, I think you're talking about The Recruit. Haven't seen it, but would like to.
In an era when the country’s first line of defense, human intelligence, is more important than ever, comes a thriller that gives an insider’s view into the CIA’s secret training ground: The Farm. James Clayton (Colin Farrell) might not have the attitude of a typical recruit, but he is one of the smartest graduating seniors in the country – and he’s just the person that Walter Burke (Al Pacino) wnats in the Agency. James regards the CIA’s mission as an intriguing alternative to an ordinary life, but before he becomes an Ops Officer, James has to survive the Farm, where the veteran Burke teaches him the ropes and the rules of the game. James quickly rises through the ranks and falls for Layla (Bridget Moynahan), one of his fellow recruits. But just when James starts to question his role and decides to “wash out,” Burke taps him for a special assignment to root out a mole. As the suspense builds toward a gripping climax, it soon becomes clear that at The Farm, the CIA’s old maxims are true: “trust no one” and “nothing is as it seems.”
Wanna go? ;D

You have then obviously not seen the earliest films in which he acted. Early Aussie films on shoe string budgets. I'm sure Mel cringes at the mention of them. was in shot. He also had bits of papers, which were his lines that he could never rember.... The camera picked it all up, and the editing did not remove them.
One of his early movies you will hate was "Puberty Blues"... Aaaaaarg!! poor camera work, bad sound, shocking script... but the gals on the beach in their bikinis were good...!

In "Puberty Blues", Mel show his interest in a particular girl, by taking a sip from a flavoured milk, and with straw in his mouth, expells the mouth contents at a "pulse rate".... need I say more...?

Watched "SuperTroopers" on satellite, friggin' hilarious movie. It only slightly exagerated the 'fun' that some officers I know get into.
Saw "Triple X" a couple days ago. Watched it again since then. Awesome movie. If you like 'Bond' films, you'll get a kick out of it. I think they were going for an "American James Bond" with this one.
My favorite line from the movie:"You got a bazooka?.....Stop thinking 'cop' and start thinking 'playstation',,,BLOW SH!T UP!"

Re Ned Kelly....
Most who call him a criminal, do not know the full history. This new movie apparently gets into the 'nitty gritty' of the rich land owners and corrupt government officials of that time. Forum Member John Kelly (who may or may not be related to Ned) may well disagree, but it is a truth that many police at that time were in fact former convicts. Those that support 'ol Ned, have the belief that he was driven to his life of crime and the killing of the Police at Stringy Bark Creek was not murder, but self defence.
I can only suggest you take a look at the movie.

It's often nigh on impossible to get the full story of event's and people's lives for many obvious reason's.
Unless one is willing to delve deeper into the history of the subject and scrutinise it from many different sources, then all most of us ever get is what the movie makers would like us to see.
Things which make good (bucks) movies are often not what really happened, so a little "bending" of the truth is required. Sometimes beyond breaking point! ;)

No Glock, it is more an underwater documentary with some stories of the people who were on the ship thrown in.
Academy Award® winning director and master storyteller James Cameron journeys back to the site of his greatest inspiration-the legendary wreck of the Titanic. With a team of the world's foremost historic and marine experts and friend Bill Paxton, he embarks on an unscripted adventure back to the final grave where nearly 1,500 souls lost their lives almost a century ago. Using state-of-the-art technology developed expressly for this expedition, Cameron and his crew are able to explore virtually all of the wreckage, inside and out, as never before. With the most advanced 3D photography, moviegoers will experience the ship as if they are part of the crew, right inside the dive subs. In this unprecedented motion picture event, made especially for IMAX 3D Theatres and specially outfitted 35mm 3D theaters across the country, Cameron and his team bring audiences to sights not seen since the sinking 90 years ago and explore why the landmark vessel-more than any shipwreck-continues to intrigue and fascinate the public.

I was impressed with the accuracy of the police (actors), right down to mannerisms, eye movements etc...
But dare I say it, it's easy to show an actor how to do a speed re-load, but see if they can get it right. Took about 4 - 5 seconds to put in a new mag. Tsk tsk...
Now the ending... well I don't want to spoil it, but there were two officers who should not have been doing what they did at the end. Have a look, you'll see. They were the only errors I spotted.

My wife and I checked out Bad Boys II this afternoon. Talk about an awesome movie! 8) I thought it made the first one seem a little boring. ;)
My wife couldn't believe some of the audience though. Kids she would put to be about 9 or 10 years od with parents/guardians. This movie is a lot more action, language, gore, and skin showing than the first. Surprising to her (and me) that such young kids would be permitted to see it. Alas, we have no kids, so all we can refer to is our childhood. There is not chance my parents would have let me see either of the Bad Boys movies, let alone quite a few of the movies we own!
I look forward to purchasing the DVD. With Will & Martin, there should be some killer bonus material! ;D

May I recommend Bless This Child. With Jimmy Smits and Kim Basinger. The police are stumped by a series of murders of children-- all the exact same age. Behind the murders is a satanic group that believes "The Sent One" will be in the form of a child a certain age. The movie is not religious in nature, but it blatantly shows the fear and cruelty of evil, yet it also shows the power of good through angels. It is very well done with good credible acting. The movie has been out for awhile, so you can probably find it on the "49 cents" rental shelf.
SWAT was ok. Great shoot em up bang bang but not a whole lot to the plot...

Open Range is just like all Costner movies... boy meets girl etc..
However, the plot is strong, Douvall repeats his fine performance as in Lonesome Dove and overall, is very entertaining. The shoot out near the end of the movie is accurate, as in how those gunfights really happened.

My wife and I went DVD rental happy yesterday. 3 I will watch and one she will.
The Life of David Gale
Dark Blue
Head of State
Ghost Ship
I don't want to see the last one. Just doesn't appeal.
But, we watched The Life of David Gale last night. Interesting movie. I thought it was pretty good. Not likely to buy it, though. Gotta be on your toes somewhat, because it frequently flashes from past to present times. Also, it was somewhat predictable. I had what I thought to be the ending figured out around 1/2 way through. Generally I was correct, but there were a couple details that went different than expected.
All in all, I thought it was at least a strong *** but not quite a ****. I guess *** and 1/2 would be a fair "grade" for this.
Planning to watch Head of State today. The other two aren't due until next Sunday. I won't watch Ghost Ship and my wife won't watch Dark Blue so e'll have to figure out how to share the DVD player this week! ;)
Bike and I might go see S.W.A.T. tomorrow. 8)

sip and i did see SWAT I thought it was pretty decent. not TOO many errors. at least the actors knew what they were doing and acted like cops. or at least close enough.
i wasn't too keen on the whole claymore thing.... LL Cool J's character should have had a round that would have worked somewhat on the lock.
Pistol mag changes went pretty well. I should get it on computer/dvd so i can count rounds to see if they should get more praise than i am giving them right now... !

I bought Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers the other day. I've made it to almost the 90 minute mark, albeit in about 20 minute sections. There's always something better/more important/more urgent to do at home than watch a movie from start to finish.
I really need to go to the theater to really enjoy a movie. Or, maybe I just need a drink before the movie to make me forget the other stuff. 8)
Anyway, it's good so far. ;D
Saw a good one on pay per view,,, think it was "THEY",, kinda creepy like "THE OTHERS" and "GHOST SHIP", "DARKNESS FALLS " was pretty good too!

Mmmmm? He was not a cowboy in the movie, but rather somebody who worked the range. Remember the conversation he had about the things he had done....? There was the vivid suggestion that he was one of Quantrell's Kansas Raiders.

I went and saw... Once upon a time in Mexico yesterday.
I considered it a bit of a let down really. Some big names on the bill, but there was so little in story line and dialogue. I sort of thought it was just actors and words to support the ongoing action and violence.
The action sequences, I considered pure fantasy... like the scene where two guys with hand guns, walk into a street where a dozen soldiers with shouldered and aimed assault rifles can't seem to hit them, but the two guys without aiming (just pointing in the general direction) their hand guns were able to do one shot per kill each time.. A bit over the top.
Overall, I considered the movie overindulgent in violence, make-up was poor (the blood on Depp's face never dried and defied gravity), poorly scripted and a poor story line.
Two Stars

I recently bought "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" on DVD...
I love that movie. I think it's Lee Van Cleefs best role her ever played.
With the good clarity on DVD, however, it is so easy to spot the "mistakes". I noted the wooden bridge had steel poles painted to look like logs. The movie being set during the civil war, had rifled cannons. I don't think they were developed till the late 1800's some years after the end of the civil war.
And on a historical note... since when was the civil war fought near Santa Fe ?
But just the same.... loved that film.
We just got the Indiana Jones box set!!! Wooohooo.

I considered better than the previous two...
In the opening scene, with Pam Anderson in a mini-skirt jumping away from Jen Maccarthy, I could see the "clam"..
How did that get past censorship,,,?
A very funny movie.... Leslie Nielson and Charlie Sheen set the movie off....

I've seen the previews. Looks bazaar, to say the least. Thanks for the review, Rule!

went and sawc "Master and Commander" or whatever it's called... with Russel Crowe.
I give it 4 stars
****
It loses points for historical inaccuracies....
Movie was set in 1808
Crowe said......... "That's just the Laudenum"
That was not invented till the 1850's
In another scene, Crowe says... "Get the Sharp shooters....."
The term "sharp shooter" comes from the the soldiers from the civil war (almost 60 years later) who were trained in the use of the Sharpes Rifled Musket. They were called .... "sharpes shooters". That firearm did not exist in 1808.
But I truly enjoyed the movie. I recommend it.....

eagle, did you have any problems with that boxed set? I was at Amazon, considering ordering it for a Christmas gift, but many of the reviews by customers spoke of major problems with the discs, so I was scared. Thought I might wait until a second edition comes out or something.

MIIB funny, bloopers reel was good... kinda expected more but i guess 5 minutes in teh car was pretty good.

Whilst I know it was based loosely on actual history, the historical aspects of the movie were excellent. I personally have never liked Tom Cruise as a person or an actor, but as an actor in this film , I think he did a damn good job. The story was well constructed, the cinemaphotography leaves no criticisim...
Being filmed in both Japan and New Zealand and studios , you would not know.
Damn good film.
A nail biter at times, an emotional heart string here and there, but captivating from start to finish.
Would not be surprised to see Oscars awarded from this film.

Daddy Daycare - Straight up family comedy. Funny as heck. Even moreso since my wife is an early childhood educator with a BA in Early Child Development. She was in hysterics. Very likely to be in our library soon.
Along Came A Spider - I'm more and more impressed with Morgan Freeman with each movie I see. I thought this was a great movie kidnap/mystery with a twist to the ending that I did not see coming. A defnitie addition to the library (more likely on my side . . . . ). ;D

Re The Last Samurai
It is openly stated that the movie was based loosely on actual history..... the word is.... VERY LOOSE.
In the movie, the Samurai revolt against the Emperor for modernising Japan... In the real history, it was the Samurai leader that was attempting to modernise Japan, and the Emperor sought to keep western culture out of Japan.
